The newly established Micro Masters Program in Human Rights from Curtin University and the Harvard/MIT platform edX provides an opportunity to learn more about human rights concepts and how these concepts are applied on the global, regional and local level.

The Micro Masters consists of three flexible Massive Open Online Courses ideal for young professionals or students who want to deepen their understanding and knowledge in the field of human rights.

Learners who successfully earn the MicroMasters Credential are eligible to apply for admission to the Master of Human Rights program at Curtin University.

If a learner applies for admission to the Master of Human Rights program at Curtin University, and is accepted, the MicroMasters Credential will count towards 25% of the coursework required for graduation in the Curtin program (on-campus or online).

MicroMasters programs are a series of graduate level courses from top universities designed to advance your career. They provide deep learning in a specific career field and are recognized by employers for their real job relevance. Students may apply to the university offering credit for the MicroMasters certificate and, if accepted, can pursue an accelerated and less expensive Master’s Degree.(edx.org)

What Is the Micro Masters Program?

In the Micro Masters Program in Human Rights, you’ll take a total of three courses related to human rights. The Course work is at graduate level and intended for those who already have some knowledge of human rights. Upon completion, you’ll receive a verified certified for a total cost of 900$.

While the Micro Masters Program in Human Rights does not award a degree, the classes that are included in the course of study are for-credit classes. Curtin University will allow you to apply the credits toward their master’s degree program in human rights and other universities may be willing to accept the credits for a Master of Arts, Master of Social Science or Master of Laws degree.

For those who do not intend to continue on to study at the master’s level, the program can improve one’s chances of getting hired for careers in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors working in advocacy, public policy, mediation, community services or development.

What Classes Are Included?

The Curtin University Micro Masters Program in Human Rights includes the following three classes:

  • Human Rights Theory and Philosophy. In this course, you’ll learn about the universal theory of human rights and what critics have said about it over the years.
  • Human Rights and Development. This course examines the connection between development and ensuring human rights for all people.
  • Activity, Advocacy and Change. During this course, you will gain an in-depth understanding about how advocacy groups, movements and activists fight for human rights and affect social change.

What Is Involved in the Program?

Each of the three courses has a duration of 12 weeks and is conducted fully online. You’ll need to invest about 8 to 10 hours of time per week to watch the videos, engage with the interactive exercises and study the reading materials assigned for each course. Your mastery of the course material is evaluated through the completion of quizzes, projects and papers.
